Greetings, fellow inhabitants of planet Earth! 👋

Welcome back to the All for Climate newsletter! In this edition, we're thrilled to introduce Scientist Rebellion, a collective of inspiring scientists fighting for a sustainable future. Join us as we discover their amazing work and upcoming events that you can get involved in. Let's take action for the planet and make a positive impact together! 🌱

Scientist Rebellion

1. In the spotlight: Scientist Rebellion 🔬

Meet Scientist Rebellion, a collective of non-violent civil disobedience scientists who have taken their expertise beyond their labs and into the streets. This movement was born out of a moral obligation to resist the climate crisis and fight for a livable future for all life on Earth. They believe that it is not enough just to write papers and advise governments; scientists are responsible for leading actions and urging influential people and the public to take action against climate change.

🎯Their mission: Their vision is a livable future for all life on Earth, and their mission is to make scientists a significant anchor in telling the truth about what we need to do to achieve that future. The collective's primary requests involve reducing economic growth in order to help the citizens and the planet by becoming more sustainable, cutting carbon emissions in the most polluted regions, as well as ending extractivism (The removal of natural resources mainly for export).

Inspiration for the Collective 💡

According to Scientist Rebellion, scientists and researchers have been writing papers, advising governments, and briefing the press for far too long without achieving the necessary action to halt the greatest destruction in human history. The belief is that if scientists, who claim to know the most about the crisis, don't act like this is a fight for survival, they cannot expect others to do so. This conviction gives scientists a moral obligation to resist and take the lead in actions, urging influential people and the public to support the fight against climate change.

Greatest Accomplishments 🏆

One of Scientist Rebellion's greatest accomplishments has been its growth from two scientists to well over 1000, active in around 40 countries. The collective took major action at COP26 and coordinated global actions under their campaigns, including Make Them Pay with XR (Extinction Rebellion), the coalition Unite Against Climate Failure, Don’t Gas Africa, 1.5 to Stay Alive, and more.

Another accomplishment is getting scientist activism on the agenda of institutions and conferences, such as the European Geosciences Union General Assembly, which now has talked about activism and joining Scientist Rebellion.

Engagement with Local Communities and Governments 🫱🏽‍🫲🏿

The Scientist Rebellion movement aims to bridge the gap between vulnerable countries and highly-emitting nations by providing research materials to educate citizens on the causes and urgency of the climate crisis. Meanwhile, those in highly-emitting countries take direct action against policymakers and fossil fuel companies by staging risky protests and roadblocks, demanding reduced emissions. The collective also collaborates with other activist movements, worker unions, and indigenous communities. It must continue as local groups have successfully influenced climate-related legislation by sharing information with their parliaments.

FACT OF THE DAY: Scientist Rebellion was founded a few years ago after two physicists threw green paint over the royal society in London (the oldest scientific institution in the world), calling on other scientists to participate in civil disobedience.

3. Gitcoin Grants 💰

What is Gitcoin?

Gitcoin is a platform that provides funding for open-source projects through its unique funding model called "quadratic funding." This model enables Gitcoin to allocate funding to projects in a way that reflects community preferences rather than solely relying on big donors.

Through Gitcoin Grants, the platform provides a way for developers to raise money for their projects from the broader community.

Alpha Round

The grants are structured into various rounds initially, such as the Alpha Round and the Beta Round. The Alpha round consisted of three curated rounds, each with its own matching pool.

  1. Web3 Open Source Software
  2. Ethereum Infrastructure
  3. Climate Solutions

Beta Round

The Beta round of Gitcoin Grants was more diverse in terms of themes. This round is focusing on improving the platform and its features, while also allowing applicants to apply for grants across several categories. These categories include:

  1. Climate Solutions
  2. Ethereum Infrastructure
  3. Web3 Community & Education
  4. Web3 Open Source Software
  5. ZK Tech

The planned dates for this round are April 25th to May 9th, and there will be 5 Core Rounds, each with a distinct matching pool:

In each round, projects that align with the theme are invited to submit their application to the platform. The community then has the opportunity to contribute to the projects they believe are most deserving. The more people that donate to a project, the more funding it receives, thanks to the quadratic funding algorithm.

Overall, Gitcoin Grants are a great way for open-source projects to secure funding while also providing a way for the community to have a say in where the money goes. By leveraging the power of quadratic funding, Gitcoin is helping to create a more equitable and democratic funding system for open-source development.

4. Throwback: the Blissness Regen Retreat 🧘‍♂️

If we are aiming for system change, the way we do business also needs to change. Together with Hanna Kuikka, the author of the Big Blissness Book, Xavier and Leen guided a group of 10 participants on their journey towards Blissness, a professional path that is aligned with a deeper soul purpose. The environment was gorgeous. They stayed at an ecovillage and community project in the South of Belgium, ‘Les 4 Sources,’ and found a perfect balance between deep work and regeneration in nature. 🌸🌱

5. The latest on dealing with the IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report 📄

The IPCC is a United Nations scientific group that monitors and assesses all global science related to climate change. Their latest report, the 6th Synthesis report, highlights the need for bolder global climate commitments, transitioning to clean energy, and reaching "net zero" emissions as soon as possible to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Even if every country delivers on its current climate pledges, it may not be enough to keep global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, which scientists believe is necessary. Mainstream news doesn’t share the depth or extent of this crisis. There is so much we can do. This needs a wartime response and full system mindset action, but no one is covering it. This creates frustration for many of us.

This information has stirred different emotions in many of us, and the Resilience Academy stepped in to help! Day, our Mental Health and Wellness Guardian, recently hosted a Twitter space to help us process in the community and share helpful ways to navigate these difficult feelings and overcome the sense of anxiety.

Some takeaway points from the Resilience Academy Twitter space that you can do TODAY! 🌻

  • This is a cultural and spiritual crisis- Do not feel isolated. Many of us have similar emotions, and we heal in community.
  • Give your emotions a voice - Journal, make music, dance, sing, create art, write poetry, talk to others, and allow those emotions to move through you.
  • Move your body - Especially when feeling intense emotions. Mindful breathing also helps move that energy.
  • Act locally, think globally - Act in the sphere of your influence and impact.
  • Build community - Build community around solutions.
  • Honour your pain for the world - Hold both the grief and the hope of this moment. Sit with these emotions and recognize this is beyond our capacity, but it is also energizing because there is so much we can do. Process both the heartbreak and build Active Hope.
  • Identify what breaks your heart - Because that specific cause can help you take inspired action in that area. What breaks your heart also opens your heart.
  • Use your voice - Write letters, speak about it, attend meetings, share with friends, use social media to spread knowledge, etc. You never know who you will inspire or the impact they will have from the things they learn from you. Plant your seeds and let them do their thing. Plant trees in people’s minds.
  • Vote with your wallet - Support local businesses that are making a difference sustainably.
